Here is a link to an interview you can listen to with Jake Adelstein who is an American Reporter who went to Japan and wrote for the biggest newspaper in Japan. Over the course of the interview he talks about the Yakuza and tons of other differences in Japanese Culture.
Interview with Jake Adelstein
This was probably one of the most fascinating interviews I’ve ever heard. About a Country which I have a lot of love for but also have even more to discover.
The interview only fuels me more in my interest and in my other side projects. For those who took the time to listen to the interview and tried to understand the differences in culture, Thank You.

Thank you for puting this here. I’m planing on moving to Japan and that gives a lot new prespective about Japan that I did not now but it was very intersting and really motivates me to continue to discover this great country/culture.
Ah yeah i was listening to CAG and cheapyd brought it up. Thanks for reminding me about it.
this looks interesting. i have been curious of japanese life for a while. anime and manga got me interested and ive seen a few japanese only films. i do want to go to japan one day to see what its like, but only after ive learned enough japanese to get by. as a personal rule for myself, if you go to another country, you need to learn the langauge or atleast enough to get by, specially if you plan on being there for a long time.
anyway, ill give this a read and listen to soon.
I saw the 60 Minutes interview of this guy the other week and it was a very interesting story. It really does shine light to the other side of Japan where its not just Anime Video games and sushi. Good Listen and I hope to learn more about this part of Japan that I have not been that aware of.

That was super interesting, David. I love NPR. Thanks for sharing.
Man, that guy was incredibly lucky to get that job. Seriously, Yahweh was on his side.
Oh, and the interview won’t load for me SAAD FAYCEE.
yo thanks alot david… i never knew about japan’s other side … its soo awesome
Wow, I love learning new things about Japan, their culture is so much more diverse, I never knew the Yakuza were such an established organization in Japan, I thought there were more under the radar, but they have business cards!
Also never knew that their motives aren’t so bad, although I may not agree with some of their actions, I do agree with what Jake Adelstein said about them being a “necessary evil”, can’t wait to go to University for my Japan abroad programme.
That was interesting, thanks David =]
Thank you so much for putting this up here David. I love sociology and Japanese culture, so this was a great listen!
Thanks David, I’ll give it a listen when I have the time… bookmark~!
