(PS.:I just heard about the earthquake in Chille, and the Tsunami is hitting japan too!O_o Really hope David is nowhere around the eastcoast, there might be an evacuation according to the authorities.

The Earthquake was of the coast of Naha, Okinawa yesterday. I left Naha, Okinawa two days ago. It was kind of crazy. I called my Aunt Lily, there was no Tsunami.

I like that I’ve heard Brad complain about silent protagonists, but when Samus talking was brought up, he gave an exasperated, “Why?” His own words when asked why Link should talk and have voice acting, “Why not?”

I don’t know much about either Link or Samus, but I could definitely see a more charitable way to interpret Brad’s comments. For example, if it makes sense for a character to not be the talkative type (say, because she spends most of her life in a suit, cut off physical contact with the world, and interacts with hostile aliens all day), introducing a voice element might be unwanted.

However, if you have a character who interacts with all sorts of lovable non-hostiles (shop-owners, innkeepers, etc.), then it might be time to introduce some voice.

I think the difference is this: if the lack of dialogue has always been driven by technology, i.e., it’s too damn hard, then that’s not a strong reason to continue with the tradition. If, OTOH, the lack of dialogue stems from something inherent about the character, i.e., she doesn’t isn’t the kind of person that would talk esp, given the harsh, surrounding environment, then keeping the tradition alive makes sense.

Samus should remain a silent protagonist for a very simple reason.

If she is talking, then she is talking to someone.

Samus should not talk to anyone because Metroid should be, and always has been, about isolation. There is something very atmospheric about her being all alone on these alien worlds.

I would let it slide if maybe it were voiced internal monologue. And maybe they can even do something interesting on the theme of loneliness.

But yeah, it has nothing to do with my opinions on silent protagonists, but more on my thoughts about Metroid. Silent protagonists are still fucking awful. Including Link.

Thats weird…..there was an anouncement of big waves, and maybe even a tsunami.:P Well, better no waves then flooded japan:P

@Sam and Brad:

I suppose that does make sense. However, in the opening cinematic, it seems like Samus is waking up in some facility, and there are other people there, so it seems like she might speak. I don’t think she even says anything directly to the the other people, but is actually just narrating (though I could be wrong, given the poor quality of the leaked footage).
