The Brad Awards are sacred. So sacred that they can't be awarded until two weeks after Brad has played the game. I've been busy folks, and I'm sure everyone has been waiting my righteous assessment of E3. I saw and played so many great games this year, and here are the ones that stood out.

Game of the Show (playable) – Vanquish

I was somewhat frustrated when I first heard that Shinji Mikami's new game was going to be a third person shooter. Japanese developers have always lagged behind when it comes making quality shooters that are successful in the West. It's not so much the cultural differences (we love murder!!), but really that Japanese shooters never feel right. Their games seem to lack whatever black magic Bungie conjured up back in 2001 with Halo. Time and time again we've seen Japanese development fall flat on its face when making these shooters to appeal to "us" instead of making the games they want to make or are good at making. And to hear Mikami himself say this was the goal with Vanquish -- I was expecting a disappointment.

Well I was being stupid, because the demo was fantastic. While the shooting could have used more aim assist, the ability to slow down time during acrobatic maneuvers made up for this shortcoming. In fact, because aiming well was directly tied to flashy moves (boosting, vaulting, rolling, jumping-off-dudes-faces), I killed in style not because I was trying to obtain a high score, but because I needed to in order to survive. This flip in game philosophy is core to what makes Vanquish so fun to play. Imagine Wet, if Wet wasn't awful. Now add in amazing visuals and animations, rad enemy and boss designs, crazy set-piece moments, and all those flourishes that certain games seem to lack; and you start to understand why Vanquish is my Game of the Show.

Honorable Mention: Twisted Metal, Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light, Ghost Trick, Death Spank

Game of the Show (non-playable) - Metal Gear Rising

With few notable exceptions, ever since the release of God of War, the character action genre has been flooded with uninspired clones. The problem is that God of War has always favored presentation and spectacle over combat depth (Mortal Kombat over Street Fighter if you will). And while God of War certainly succeeds at what it wants to be, the clones it inspires don't often have the budget or team size to pull off the same level of AAA polish. So what we usually get are mediocre mash-fests.

But when I saw the trailer for Metal Gear Rising, I saw something I haven't seen in the genre in a really long time -- something original. And as much as I love Bayonetta, even that game is simply a refinement (or perfection) of the Devil May Cry formula. The MG:R trailer was short, but it had a lasting impact. Sword-destructible environments and people? Precision cutting? I got the same goosebumps I got when I saw Red Faction for the first time. I just can't stop thinking about how this new tech could change everything for the genre. Who needs a "combo" when you have a sword that does what its supposed to do? Be sure to check out my full impressions and watch the trailer here.

Honorable Mention: Portal 2, Red Faction: Armageddon

Biggest Surprise - Lord of the Rings: War in the North

While I was excited to see how War in the North was shaping up, I was expecting a smaller game that would appeal to a niche audience that loves loot and Lord of the Rings. The surprise was just how much of of a AAA Western RPG the game has already become. The demonstration of the game felt like Mass Effect meets Dragon Age, but with online co-op. I don't care if you don't like Lord of the Rings or even RPGs; if you enjoy playing games with your friends, put this on your radar now. Also, check out my more in-depth impressions of War in the North.

Honorable Mention: Red Faction: Armageddon, Hydrophobia

Biggest Disappointment - Wasted Talent

Where do I start? Michel Ancel and his team working on a downloadable Rayman title instead of Beyond Good and Evil 2. Koji Iagrashi and his team working on a downloadable Castlevania with a budget so small they couldn't even afford new graphics. Retro Studios working on a seemingly uninspired remake of a "decent" series when they are known for one of the most ambitious and successful remakes of one of the industries' greatest franchises. Rare being tied up in Kinect bullshit when they are responsible for some of the most original and creative games this generation. Bungie coming close to completely reviving a dead genre on consoles and deciding to make it a single level distraction instead of a revolution. I'm sad, and will stop now.

Honorable Mention: Zelda: Skyward Sword, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Agreed. However the Vanquish mention was a surprise. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for that one. However I am a little worried as to how the gameplay of Rising is going to pan out. I couldn't care less about Kinect, but the footage shown at the MS Keynote looked as if it was better suited for the Move controls.

...if only we got a taste of Last Guardian. TGS is too long of a wait.

Maybe one day your space shooter will exist maybe after Bungie realizes how they are being fools or maybe someone will make a level in LBP2 and it will be what you wanted :P

As far as the Vanquish subject goes it looks good and considering this is the these guys also made Bayonetta it should be more then worth the 60 dollars when it comes out. And as for the "Black magic" Bungie conjured up the only thing i have noticed that halo differed from the other shooter games is that you take awhile to die, like you can stand out in the open for a good 5 seconds on legendary mode and still have time to find cover. I don't know i might be oversimplifying it.

Can't wait for the LotR game~ but, I still have low expectations for it. The last RPG to come out of the franchise wasn't all that original, nor was the gameplay that great. oh, well.

Here's looking forward to more gameplay footage of Vanquish. P* does little gameplay details really well, so I'm hoping to see how refined they managed to make the game.

"The demonstration of the game felt like Mass Effect meets Dragon Age, but with online co-op" Holy shit. I'll definitely be keeping and eye out for this. I'm not really a Lord of the Rings fan but damn this seems interesting. Metal Gear Rising also looks amazing but I hope that precision cutting skill has a better purpose than just making the kills look better. Maybe disable someone by cutting their hands off like shooting a gun out of someone's hand in Red Dead.

Not surprised to see Vanquish up here at all. You guys seemed really hyped for it on your E3 coverage podcasts and I can see why. I got psyched for this game just from watching the videos, which I know doesn't do the actual gameplay justice. I think we all were expecting the worst when we saw the trailer with the vaguely Hilary Clinton looking woman in them, and the guy's suit that looked like it was made from dice. Shame on all of us for doing that to Mikami and Platinum Games, it looks like they have another winner on their hands. I'm also really interested in Lara Croft and Ghost Trick. My only worry about Lara Croft is I don't have much experience playing the past Tomb Raider games. I don't think playing Guardian of light will spoil me on Tomb Raider games though as they seem different enough in gameplay style. Ghost Trick is just smooth. The animations are great, the art is fantastic, and the concept of the game is one of the more interesting I've heard in a while (let alone on a handheld).

Rising huh? This is a good pick. The trailer was impressive and if it delivers on half of its promises then the game should be great. I'm glad to see Red Faction get a mention here as I was expecting that to be your pick for this category (I was wrong apparently). Portal 2 is not a surprise however, that game looks amazing. I didn't think much could change from Portal 1 to Portal 2, and I was wrong. They have managed to add new mechanics to a game and not break the core gameplay from the first. That's hard to do but so far so good.

War in the North really had me sold on loot with your friends. I love good loot systems, and I love good co-op play. I don't have my hope up too high for this game quite yet though, as I haven't done much research on it yet. But from what I do know, there is nothing I don't like.

Disappointments were abound at E3 this year and I think you guys got them all in your posts here. I'm willing to bet that the little area shown in Skyward Sword won't even be in the final game. That's not the way to show off a Zelda game. I understand they wanted to show off the controls, but why not just let us play a little bit from a dungeon or from Hyrule Field or somewhere? Hopefully the final product will deliver in traditional Nintendo fashion.

I guess I should look at some Red Faction: Armageddon stuff. I pretty much wrote the game off when I learned it was underground.

I didn't expect you to say anything positive about Vanquish. This is good news for me as I was kinda drawn in by the weapons and armor designs, but to hear that the game is likely good and fun... well. I'm looking forward to it.

I do have to ask though... how good/bad was Front Mission Evolved. I may get it just because I love Front Mission... but it is still a shame to see it bastardized from the original Tactical RPG it was to... another 3rd person simulator of sorts.

Even if Armored Core controls clunky, I'm betting that like always, whatever anyone else comes up with in terms of 3rd person mech simulators will be worse than Armored Core.

Good article with good in-depth details. However, Brad, were you expecting there to be no announcement for the New Elder Scrolls, and if so, have you lost more faith in Bethesda as for a new game coming in the future?

I was surprised to see Vanquish on here as well. I honestly wasn't expecting anything at all from it but it seems I have the pleasure of being pleasantly surprised.

Good show, I especially liked when David and Brad were arguing over Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Kinda hard to think about it when after Vanquish was announced earlier this year, people were skeptical that it could have been a generic first person shooter from Japan. God, I'm glad that's out of the question, since the recent E3 gameplay videos looks AWESOME. Hope that people don't turn down Vanquish for the many reasons gamers could be baffled (like "Oh, Vanquish is a Gears clone, blah blah blah..."). Somehow I sense deja-vu when Bayonetta was first announced, but this time we get Spike Siegel in a bad-ass male armored version of PN-03's character.

Bungie has been disappointing me a lot this Gen enough to tell me that they are not even gonna try to make to make a game with much ambition an change, but instead play it safe and sell the same thing they've been selling since halo 2. Its very annoying and needs to change before I just not even consider what Bungie has to say.

Rare are quite possibly the underdogs of the industry: I've played a lot of games that were great by Rare, yet people always say " They're not good anymore". They make very good games, and I eagerly await a new conker game as Conker: Live and Reloaded was really a great looking game for its generation.

The new Rayman, I think, is too little, too late. The Art style is interesting and the gameplay looks like the regular old Rayman, but I think everyone would rather see a new Beyond Good and Evil.
