The Darkness II Demo

Demo fever seems to be spreading throughout the industry right now.  EA's putting on quite a show with the demos for Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning (out today) and the official demo for Mass Effect 3 (coming soon-ish) both unlocking content for the later of the two.  EA is also looking to release a demo of Syndicate later this month as Joseph already mentioned.

Not one to let the competition have all the fun, 2K has released a demo for next month's heart-ingesting fun time otherwise known at The Darkness 2.  The demo, exclusive to the Xbox 360 this week (Gold subscribers only) and appearing elsewhere thereafter, encompasses the opening fifteen or so minutes of the game.  This is in contrast to what was shown at E3 2011 which was a level set in a rundown New Jersey carnival.

While I'm stuck at work and thus can't give my reactions to it I will say that I'm not exactly thrilled with Digital Extremes' take on the property.  The change in design from a semi-open world shooter to a more linear focus is a loss in my opinion and so is the change in voice actor for our protagonist.  I am however excited to see where they take Jackie Estacado as The Darkness was one of my favorite games of this generation.  Click the link below to add it to your 360's download queue.

Also, if you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend downloading the demo for Asura's Wrath.  It's quite possibly the closest thing us North American gamers will ever get to a Gurren Lagann game.

It's been such a long time since I played through The Darkness. Playing this demo has reminded me how good a game it was!

Might look into playing through it again to get to grips with the story before this comes out.

I am actually super excited for this game. I felt that the open world aspect of the Darkness 1 wasn't executed very well thanks to it's sparce population and lack of real interactivity. I think Digital Extremes has done enough different to really bring this universe to life while playing to their strengths. I wouldn't really want that studio to attempt to create another open-world.

The demo was pretty cool, I'm not gonna lie. My only gripe is that they seem to have taken a step away from the original formula and given it a more points based game. The demo is completely linear and hopefully it isn't, because part of what I loved about the first game was the ability to wander around and discover things. To be honest, I'm gonna have to see more about this game before I consider buying it.

Mean to say, hopefully the full game isn't as linear as the demo

Playing this demo at PAX East last year was awesome. Very excited for the release of this.

The Darkness was such a unique game for its time. I'm curious to see how the sequel will innovate in its own direction.
