Watch the short clip above. I noticed something off about the graphics in Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. While the game is certainly crisp and bright, and has some nice textures, I believe I figured out what is missing. What does a slightly bigger budget and a few extra months add to a game? I'll show you after the jump.

I remember seeing a post on the Platinum Games Blog last year before the release of Bayonetta. The videos below are pulled from a "making of" post wherein one of the designers reveals the importance of the "finishing touches." The first video reveals the final product, while the video below that shows what the game's combat looks like before adding in things like particle effects, environmental effects, blood, etc. It's a pretty huge visual downgrade.

Now watch the Prince of Persia video again. See the problem? It lacks that important oomph that Bayonetta has in its final form. This is one of the major reasons why Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands looks so damn bland. The truth is I've been having fun with the game, but it was clearly rushed to be released in time with the movie. Had the development team had time to pretty up this beast, maybe people would not be treating it like the budget movie tie-in game that it really isn't.

The other problem? The main character looks WAAAAY too much like this guy:

    Shazbot, those Bayonetta vidyas makes me wish I had an HDTV and accompanying HDMI cable. =(

    By the way... Does anyone else find it a bit too convenient that the acronym for Prince of Persia is only one letter away from spelling 'Poop'? There be somethin' fishy afoot here.

    I played this game for about 5 minutes while waiting to get my copy of Red Dead Redemption and I have to say I was very disappointed. I feel like this game could have been really good if the movie wasn't being made, because it was clearly rushed to take advantage of the movie's publicity. I agree with you, the game needed a little more time and polish and it could have been a lot better. In the short time that I played it there was just nothing that really hooked me in to buying the game, so I'll probably just wait for it to go down in price.

    Idk, but the prince never really had an intriguing combat system to begin with...it always fell short to me. Then again, Ubisoft hasnt been in their prime lately and itmakes me sad.

    Yeah, but Bayonetta has more of (I guess you would say) an excuse to have wispy glowy things and particles flying off her. This game is trying to return to something before the somewhat-stylish 2008 game, so it seems natural the sense of style in this game is going to be confused. Yeah, it's ugly, but what can you do?

    hmm i hope there aren't too many combat sequences like what was in the first video. combat has never really been PoP's strong point, as it should not be.

    Also, I agree the Prince looks a bit too hairy in this game compared to the past games.

    Darknezz's retardation impresses me. I was not saying Prince of Persia needs to look like Bayonetta, but instead using this Platinum Games "making-of" post that I recalled as an example to show that this PoP has no damn particle effects.

    Did you just stop thinking when you saw Bayonetta, or are you actually this stupid?

    Watch a video of any game out there to see what I'm talking about. Try that new Knights Contract gameplay trailer to see these effects in full glory. I used the Bayonneta clips because they had a before and after.

    OH! Particle effects! *facepalm*

    I knew the game just looked too... "clean." The world and characters didn't seem very dynamic and I couldn't put my finger on what was missing other than I kept coming back to the word "clean." Now that Brad so sweetly pointed out the lack of particle effects, my gut feeling with the "clean" word attached to it makes sense now. And the lack of the particle effects and that kind of dynamic effects are missing, and what is there is just, well, bland.

    I thought the same thing myself when I saw some PoP combat, its just so bland and visually boring. Not the worst crime a game can commit but the level of polish slapped on and the amount of little touches here and there is what usually defines the overall quality in my opinion.

    I honestly don't see the problem. The effects between the two games are more or less the same in THOSE videos. PoP still has more than the post-"finishing touch" Bayonetta video. Another thing, I see the enemies taking impact a lot more than the final version of Bayonetta. The cortex destroying flash of her attacks covers up most of the enemy animations and Bayonetta is attacking so quickly, every enemy just stands there convulsing like crazy.

    Lets be honest. Every game can look better with a few extra months of work. I am sure developers would agree, but time equals money. Bayonetta could have used a few extra months to actually go the lengths of making proper cut scenes for example.

    I'm not sure if it's just from being broadcast over the feed, but the thing I thought you were going to say about the new Prince is that it doesn't look like anyone really has shadows for some reason.

    Since I had to leave early and couldn't "debate" with what I said, I'll take the opportunity to do so here.

    While Prince of Persia has action in it, it's not really an action game, in the sense that there is way more platforming and puzzles involved than, say, Bayonetta. Even if the new PoP has more action in it, or more enemies in it, it's still acrobatics and puzzles more so. The reason for stating that follows. The feeling that Particle Effects should be added to Prince of Persia ( in an almost high caliber way) is kind of silly. Wacthing that clip of Prince of Persia, I saw plenty of Particle Effects. I saw contact with the 'Sand Skeletons' I saw water ripples from the Prince's Movement in he pool, etc.

    Sure, these aren't as involved as the clips, or even game of Bayonetta, but to have outlandish Particle Effects, or to even say, This game is missing things, is odd.

    I see the Effects used in Bayonetta as more as an artist choice and aesthetically incorporated for various reasons. One of them being, Bayonetta is an action game. An over the top, combo driven, large scale ( much larger than big battles in Prince of Persia) game.

    To say that, if this game or that game had a bigger budget or longer development cycle to add these effects in, is why I have reservations about this post.

    If i'm not mistaken, going by this statement, Bayonetta had a smaller budget than most of their previous games. Sure it had a bit of a longer cycle, and I understand people views on PoP feeling rushed to go along with the movie.

    I'm in no way bashing Bayonetta. I acknowledge it's production value, it's eccentricities and energy. But it's a different game, done by a different Dev; one who like over the top effects etc. Bayonetta adds tons of effects because that is what makes the game. I also understand why you compare this game to others; as it is one of your favorite games you've played, and you hold it highly.

    But to me, and in my opinion, it seems that you dock a game points because it isn't Bayonetta. Other examples include ( Darksiders for combat, etc). I mean, it's perfectly fine to bring up points about it and reasonable that you, once again, compare it with a highly regarded game of yours.

    Devs do games differently, with different design approaches; Western or Japanese or otherwise. To say that this game is missing something is understandable, but to compare it with Particle Effects ( that you say PoP lacks) with an over the top ACTION game, with over the top effects, is why I brought this up.

    I couldn't find any of games that show a before and after of things added to their product. So, I won't invalidate that point, but I respect that Bayonetta shows that.

    Also, if they could make the Prince a witch or have high- heels come out of his sword or something then I wouldn't have a problem .

    I'm making an observation and you seem to think I'm slighting the game in some way. I'm saying it looks budget and that's going to effect sales and reviews. Why are you getting so defensive? I'm actually enjoying the game a lot more than Prince of Persia 2008. In fact, I HATE PoP 2008. But guess what, that game doesn't look like shit. Check out the video below.

    She how much better that looks? It's not crazy and over the top like Bayonetta, but it did have a much larger budget and dev cycle than this PoP. Even simple sword strikes have various particle and lighting effects. It doesn't have to be a "silly Japan game" to have nice particle effects, lighting effects, shading, shadows, etc.

    Guess what? Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time came out in 2003 and has more of these effects:

    Was this game so CRAZY and OVER THE TOP that they were a better fit? No you dumbass. They add these things in so their game doesn't look like combat strait out of an western action RPG from a decade ago.

    But you still seem to be missing the point. I never said the game needs to look like Bayonetta, or should have over the top effects like Bayonetta. I used those videos to because they show how big a difference these types of effects have on the visual polish of a game.

    And the Darksiders comment was fuck all stupid too. I don't dislike the combat in Darksiders because it's not as good as Bayonetta -- I dislike it because it simply isn't very good. I can think of dozens of other games with much more satisfying combat in them that pre-dated Bayonetta. Hell... I enjoy the combat more in this PoP game than I did Darksiders.

    Also, I never said PoP has to live up to the quality of Bayonetta. That was never the point, but some of you all are too stupid to see that. And more importantly I have NEVER even suggested Bayonnetta set visual standards that need to be met by other developers. I only ever praise Bayonetta in terms of combat and controls and I find it hilarious you all seem to think I consider Bayonnetta some sort of flawless game. Bayonneta was my 3rd favorite game of last year. Remember what my number 1 was? Dragon Age -- A game they could have also used a lot more visual polish as well. Did they keep me from placing it as number 1? No.... So quit acting like I'm making a value judgment on the overall quality of this game based on my observation. It just SO.. FUCKING.. STUPID.

    Shut up and actually find something worthy of all the time you are wasting arguing with me on this.

    LOL after watching the video of the old 2003 PoP I laughed as the death animations were quite beautiful.

    In the new one they literally just disappear with no flourish what so ever.

    I guess the developer thought the beloved Prince of Persia: Sand of Time could have sold better without that CRAZY OVER THE TOP JAPANEEZY ANIME EFFECTS.

    The new movie looks pretty over-the-top JAPANEEZY too with all its cool effects.

    Actually I think giving The Forgotten Sands "water ripples" as Iron T pointed out is a little risque. I might have to censor it like I did the penis in GTA 4.

    I understood the whole thing from the get-go. Brad was not at all comparing PoP to Bayonetta but he was using Bayonetta as an example to show the effectiveness that these particle effects have on a game and It does seem that the developers rushed this game to coincide with the release of the movie.

    Thats rather disappointing... I'd still like to play it some time but its annoying to notice such small yet important details missing because they decided to release it prematurely.
