Honestly, I was not expecting much from Metal Gear Rising. Great combat controls are paramount for me when it comes to character action games. And while I love the Metal Gear series, the sword mechanics in MGS 2 were pretty terrible. In fact, most of the scenarios involving anything other than the default control scheme in the series have been pretty terrible. Actually, even the default control schemes for much of the series have been terrible. Needless to say, my concerns for this game were well warranted.

Blah blah blah, watch the trailer below! HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!! You can cut the shit out of shit!!! FUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCK!!!!

Ever since we were kids, we've dreamed of video game swords doing what real swords do when used by real life cybernetic ninjas. This of course being the cutting of shit in half. But what did we get instead? Swords (and lightsabers!) taking way too fucking long to kill an enemy. Bushido Blade was a brilliant fighting game because you could win a fight in a single well timed slash. But even in that game, dudes weren't in pieces at the end of a fight. Well, this problem has been remedied.

Because HOLY FUCKING SHIT YOU CAN CUT A DOOOOD IN HALF!! Not after 2 or 3 slashes either. Every slash at a dude in the trailer kills a dude in the trailer. This is how it should be. The tech alone is enough to make my balls tingle. Seeing the environment fall to pieces as incidental victims of a dude-slashing fest is certainly impressive. The slashes appear to be completely dynamic as well. Remember those 60 second bursts of empowerment we had when we stumbled into a katana in Dead Rising? Metal Gear Rising might be that feeling stretched out through an entire game.

Unfortunately, as a gameplay trailer, Metal Gear Rising doesn't appear to be much more than a really cool tech demo. We know nothing of the game's structure or if Raiden has other ways of interacting with enemies (does he need other ways?). The controls for movement, guarding, evading, or (please god no) platforming, can make or break this game. Also, the "slow-down-time-and-slash-shit-with-precision" could end up being completely aesthetic with no real strategic use. Hopefully the implementation of the precision striking will be required to disable parts of harder enemies or bosses. As it has been shown, this technique is used to stylishly finish off a dude at the cost of slowing down the pace of the game.

Either way, I want to see more of this. And so do you.

Brad

The way he moves around does seem a bit stiff for a ninja, but I agree no other game has done slicing shit up as good as this. Can't wait to see more about it at Konami's event.

You guys ever hear of a game called Madworld?
Sorry to be playing devil's advocate, but this is just another gimmick that will get old after an hour of gameplay.

This was one of the few trailers that REALLY blew me away.

I mean the trailer starts, and has Raiden slicing that guys arm in half and then severing his torso, and I was thinking "fuck, this is cool, but I hate it when they show things in trailers that you probably be able to do in game..." Then gameplay starts AND YOU REALLY CAN SLICE THINGS TO PIECES. Mind. was. blown.

Amazing tech aside, I am very interested to see where this MGS is going with this game, story wise especially.

I'm a huge MGS fan and I was really looking forward to this trailer, I was really impressed. But I'm also worried that this MGS is going to be a hack and slash game and barely any stealth elements! I cant imagine a MGS game with no stealth.
Story wise, I hope it takes place after MGS4. I don't want Shigenotu Matsuyama screwing with Kojima's story.

But so far I'm looking forward to it and hoping more info will be released soon.

Although the gameplay of MGS:Rising cutting dudes in half in every possible, conceivable angle was no less than impressive, I don't see how this hacking and slashing will keep up throughout the entirety of the game WITHOUT becoming tedious. And I'm worried that through all this swordplay, there may not be much room for any stealthiness that the MGS series is known for, just straight up mind numbing katana killing fests. Maybe somehow Kojima will pull it off with the full on sword killing in its entirety, THROUGH THE USE OF NANOMACHINES! I don't know... For now, I'm being a skeptic until I see a lot more gameplay of Rising and if this will be integrated with Kinect.

I literally just creamed myself a little.

There is great opportunity for this game to be absolutely insane. I'm hoping for some well placed stealth. After all, the very beginning of the trailer had Raiden getting the drop on the guy. And he did it via stealth, right? Otherwise there would be no point in Raiden being a Cyborgninja... if there is no stealth why not just make him a Cyborg soldier/warrior/brute? So hopefully that mechanic is intelligently implemented. And then there's the basic hope that the swordplay functions as awesomely as it looks. If they mess up that mechanic, Snake help them.

Just the option to cut anything, anyway, anywhere seems like it really takes cake from sandbox type games.

Looks like Brad's gonna have another space Boner.

I wonder if MGSR will be a open world game. Does anyone think that MGSR might be better or worse if its open world?

Move and Natal (because Kinect is a dumb name) are gonna be used to do that. Watch.

As much as i enjoyed the trailer somewhat, I am still very skeptical about this game. As you brad, i am a major fan of the Metal gear games. i will continue to watch this title and hope for the best. nothing is a seller point for me yet.

Okay, I wasn't even hyped at all about the MGS Franchise until i saw this trailer. Raiden looks better than ever and will cut you some fruits before he cuts your limbs off. I hope this game ends up like most of the MGS games. Full of Suprises.

One thing that I'm really curious about is that when you cut off someone's limbs but not the torso or head (or any part that would kill them immediately for that matter), would they immediately die as well or be like garghgarghgarghgarghgarghgarghgargh die.
