The future of TV on video game consoles is here... and it ain't pretty.

At the beginning of October I detailed Microsoft's initial plans for their roll-out of Xbox 360 TV service and while I was able to provide a list of potential content partners most of them were vague as to how and what would be provided.  Verizon is the first to step up to answer this question though as this morning the telecom giant detailed their plans for FiOS service on Microsoft's console.  And yes, it is just as expensive as it sounded last month.

"Coming soon," the press release states, Verizon will provide 26 channels worth of content (the identities of these channels remain elusive) with Kinect voice and gesture functionality.  These channels will not require extra hardware to get them but you have to be signed up for FiOS TV and intenet while maintaining an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

It gets worse though.  For a mere $89.99 a month you can get their "Triple Play" bundle which includes FiOS TV, internet and phone service for two years.  For those of us you have that kind of money to spend and sign up before January 21st you get both a free 12-month subscription to Xbox Live and a copy of Halo CE Anniversary.

So, yea, $90 a month to watch 26 TV channels on my Xbox 360?  How is that a deal?  If this is what will be typical of Xbox TV then I say 'no thank you.'  With cable television providers looking around desperately to make up for the continual loss of subscribers it really is a wonder how companies like Verizon expect to get a subscriber base on a nigh ripoff scheme like this.  I myself subsist on a combination of Netflix, Hulu and Crunchyroll and that's more than enough to get me by.

Do yourselves a favor folks: don't buy into this.

Did you really expect Microsoft to go into deals with several major content providers and somehow come out and give its consumers free TV shows? You've got to remember that it's a business. Anyway, the TV seems like a cool little addition for people who already are subscribed to these various cable companies plans, but I really don't see anyone going out of their way JUST to watch TV on the 360. We've got our cable through Comcast here, and I'm looking forward to see what content is available. It'll actually be pretty cool for me, since I don't have a cable box in my room. Stinks that Comcast won't be showing live TV though, just On Demand stuff.

$90 a month?! Jesus christ. My telly, internet & phonebill costs around £20 a month & I thought that was expensive!
I don't think many people are gonna go for this, but I definitely think that a few will, and I feel sorry for their bank accounts.

Seeings as I have the HBO subscription, that's the only thing I know I'll be able to try out. My interest in the ability to watch shit on my 360 just isn't cost effective with this plan. Maybe when a decent offer rolls around, one not influenced by greedy corporations who don't know how to make a sale.

89$ a month yeah right... People would be fools to buy into something like this. They're better off just watching cable or satellite. Because this just does not seem feasible.

I think you missed the fact that it's $90 a month for internet, phone and TV service. Not just for access to the FiOS TV service on XBOX 360. The phone service is unlimited calling anywhere in US and the internet is 15M / 5M (download / upload) so actually it's a pretty good deal.
